Look, I’m a huge fan of dark fantasy and moralistically complex stories, but the latest chapter of the webtoon “I’m Being Raised by Villains” just completely shattered my brain into a million pieces. I’m talking full-on mind explosion from all the insane twists and turns. Where do I even begin?!
For those not caught up, the story follows a human kid named Seven who was adopted and raised by some of the biggest villains and evildoers in this fantasy world. It’s been one hell of a roller coaster watching them struggle with their morality and sense of loyalty to their adopted fam versus doing what’s righteous.
The Awkward Family Reunion
Chapter 36 kicks off with Seven being held captive in the lair of the totally evil Demon King, who also happens to be one of the villains that raised them. Talk about an awkward family reunion! Just when I thought the writers couldn’t throw any more hurdles at poor Seven, they go and put them in this crazy situation.
The Tension Is Through the Roof
The tension is through the roof as Seven has to decide whether to stay faithful to the people who took them in as a child, or join the heroic forces trying to stop the Demon King’s maniacal plans to destroy the world. As a reader, I was feeling so much secondhand anxiety over what decision Seven would make.
Using their sweetest charms and most convincing lies, the Demon King tries to maintain Seven’s allegiance by appealing to their loyalty and brushing aside all his atrocities as nitpicky details. At the same time, the heroes are putting the pressure on hard, calling out the Demon King’s evil and saying Seven has a chance to get out and be one of the good guys.
The Shocking, Gut-Punch Twist
I don’t want to ruin anything for those who haven’t read it, but let’s just say the way this chapter concludes took my brain straight to the woodshed! I’m talking one of the most shocking, gut-punch twists I’ve ever experienced in a story. Jaws were on the floor after that finale.
The Impeccable Storytelling
The buildup is impeccable, the pacing remains tight without being rushed, and the character work with Seven is some of the most nuanced I’ve seen in quite a while. Just when I thought I had their motivations figured out, boom – the rug gets pulled right out from under me in the best way.
“I’m Being Raised by Villains” was already an easy recommendation for fans of dense, morally complex stories, but Chapter 36 takes it to a whole other level. I’m desperately foaming at the mouth for the next chapter because this cliffhanger is going to haunt my dreams. The series continues knocking it out of the park!
