John William Oates stepped into this world on April 7, 1948. He was born in New York City and raised in North Wales, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ann De Palma, an Italian immigrant from Salerno, and Al Oates, an American but born to a Gibraltarian mother and English father.

John attended North Penn High School and graduated in 1966. During his senior year, he co-captained the wrestling team in 1965-66. In the 127 lb weight class, he was Section 2 champion. However, John rejected wrestling scholarships and opted to attend Temple University instead because it was located in the city. He wrestled there as a freshman.

In the duo, John primarily played the electric guitar and provided backing vocals, while Daryl was the lead vocalist. Numerous of the top 10 tracks they recorded were also co-written by him, including: “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone,” “Out of Touch,” “You Make My Dreams,” and “Maneater,” among others. Considered the most successful pair in pop-rock history, Hall & Oates have recorded 21 albums to date, selling over 80 million copies worldwide.
