Her mother remarried soon to Miroslav Navratil, and he became her first tennis coach. She started playing tennis at seven, and was recognized by her adoptive father’s surname. By fifteen years, she was the national tennis champion for her country.
She soon joined the United States Law Tennis Association but did not become a professional yet. In 1974, she won her first title in Orlando, Florida. The following year, she was the runner-up, and continued to play.
She got a green card in 1975 and became a US citizen and player. She garnered huge success playing a double march. Besides several double titles she won with her partners, she won her first single title in 1978, defeating Chris Evert. As a result, she became recognized as the best tennis player, as ranked by Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
In the following year, she defeated Evert once again and kept her best player title. However, the next two years were not the best for her, as Evert beat her. As a result, she began coaching with Nancy Lieberman, who helped her improve in her fitness and mental approach to the game.
In the early and mid-1980s, Martina became the best dominating tennis player, beating her opponent Evert. She lost six single titles and won numerous ones, making her dominance in tennis more prevalence.
