Williams has been one of the longest-serving members of The Temptations, but he rarely sang as the lead. Melvin Franklin and Williams were among the last surviving members of the original members of The Temptations until 1995 when Franklin died.

Williams remains one of the oldest crew members of the group and has continued to perform as latest as 2024. Besides his efforts in the group, he co-authored an autobiography and history book named Temptations, which NBC TV adapted as a miniseries.

Due to many years of dedication to music, Williams received an honorary doctorate from Stillman College in 20006. Additionally, in 1989, the celebrity was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations.
