His Sister, Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton is an enormously popular vocalist whose shrill contralto and smooth ballads have delighted audiences for more than three decades. She’s been a seven time GRAMMY Award winner due to her resilience and talent.

Toni was born in Severn, MD in 1967, and got into music early. Her dad, a Methodist priest, along with her mother, an opera singer and cosmeologist, raised 6 kids with a passion for music. Toni, eldest, started singing in the church choir.

Toni originally majored in education at Bowie State University, despite her musical ambitions. But the pull of music was too great. She dropped out to sing professionally, joining forces with her sisters to form The Braxtons. The group had moderate success, with a song appearing on the soundtrack for Eddie Murphy’s comedy Boomerang (1992).

Toni later broke out as a solo artist. Her self titled debut in 1993 was an enormous success, surpassing the Billboard 200 chart and selling over ten million copies worldwide. Singles like Breathe Again and You Mean the World to Me put Toni in the forefront of RnB.

Her sophomore album Secrets (1996) further cemented her stardom. The ballad Un-Break My Heart went to number one on charts worldwide and won Toni two Grammy Awards. But poor financial management and a bitter legal battle with the record label forced her into bankruptcy in 1998.

All these setbacks aside, Toni never lost her passion. She released a string of successful albums in the 2000s combining pop and dance music influences. Additionally, she was the very first Black actoress to portray Belle on Broadway in “Beauty and the Beast” in 2001.

Toni’s private life has also been of public interest. She married musician Keri Lewis in 2001, with whom she has two sons. The couple divorced in 2013, however. She was diagnosed with Lupus in 2010 but advocates self-care and awareness.

Toni Braxton is still a force today in the entertainment industry. She continues to tour, record and act. She has her own reality show, Braxton Family Values, with her sisters.

Toni Braxton has achieved success with a net worth of USD 70 million. But her legacy is much more than money. She’s an inspiration to singers aspiring to become professional singers, a model for women with chronic illness along with a reminder of tenacity in the midst of difficulties. Her soulful voice and strong spirit continue to draw fans from around the world.
